Moonwort is an app made by haynes lab LLC ("we"). This page explains what the app does with your information. Your private journal is stored on your phone, encrypted. haynes lab never receives it and holds no server or cloud copy. You can choose to export files or connect a Health service, as explained below.
What the app stores, and where
Moonwort stores the following in an encrypted database inside the app's private storage:
- Your journal: period start and end dates, flow, spotting, symptoms, mood, notes and basal body temperature.
- Profiles: the name you give each profile.
- Reminders: which reminders you turned on and when.
- Settings: theme, paper, temperature unit, week start, discreet mode, lock timeout and similar preferences.
The key that unlocks the database is kept in your phone's secure storage (Keychain on iPhone, Keystore on Android). If you turn on app lock, the key is also protected by your PIN. Your PIN itself is never stored. If you forget your PIN and Face ID or fingerprint cannot unlock, the journal cannot be recovered by anyone, including us, so keep a backup file.
What leaves your device
Only what you choose to send.
- Moonwort makes no network connections of its own. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no location access.
- This version has no crash reporting.
- Exports: a CSV file, a PDF summary or a backup file go wherever you send them through the share sheet. CSV and PDF files are not encrypted, so keep them somewhere safe. The backup file is encrypted with a password you choose; we cannot open it or recover the password.
- Imports: CSV files, pasted dates, Apple Health export files and Moonwort backups are read on your phone. Nothing is uploaded.
- Health sync is optional. If you connect Apple Health or Health Connect, Moonwort can read and write your first profile's logged menstrual flow, spotting and basal body temperature after you grant access. It does not write predictions. Those entries are then also stored by the health service, outside Moonwort's private journal database. You control Health permissions and the health service's storage and sync settings. In Moonwort, you can disconnect and choose to keep or remove the entries Moonwort wrote. haynes lab does not receive these entries.
- Links: the privacy policy and terms open in a browser view and load from our website like any other visit. Contact support opens your own mail app.
- Device backups: Moonwort's private journal database is excluded from the device's cloud backup and automatic transfer. Files you export and entries you choose to write to Apple Health or Health Connect are separate copies, controlled through the destination you choose. To move the journal to a new phone, use a Moonwort backup file (Settings > Move to a new phone).
We never sell, share or receive your cycle data.
Permissions
- Face ID or fingerprint (optional): only if you turn on app lock and choose to use it.
- Notifications (optional): only when you turn on a reminder. In discreet mode reminders use neutral wording. On Android the app also restarts your reminders after the phone reboots.
- Apple Health or Health Connect (optional): to read and write the first profile's logged menstrual flow, spotting and basal body temperature. Android also requests access to history older than 30 days. Access is requested after you choose Settings > Health > Connect; other features work without it.
- Moonwort does not use your location, camera, microphone or contacts.
How to delete your data
- Delete a single period from the cycle history.
- Delete everything: Settings > Privacy and lock > Erase all data.
- Uninstalling the app deletes the journal from the phone.
- Undo an import from the import screen.
- Exported files and entries already written to Health are separate copies. Manage exported files where you saved them. To remove entries Moonwort wrote to Health, use Settings > Health > Disconnect and choose to remove them, or manage access and data in the Health service. Copies held by other apps or services are managed there, separately from deleting Moonwort's journal.
Not medical advice
Predictions are estimates. Do not use Moonwort for birth control or to prevent pregnancy. Moonwort is not a medical device and does not diagnose any condition.
Children
Moonwort is meant for adults (including a parent keeping a profile for a teenager) and is not directed at children. It does not collect personal information from anyone.
Changes
If a future version changes what is described here, we will update this page and its effective date before that version is released.
